ABOUT MADI

Hailing from Gunditjmara Country in regional Victoria, Whyte works primarily in sculpture and photography. Inspired by their connection to surrounding landscapes, metalworking, and the everyday zeitgeist, Whyte’s practice is concerned with the language of lines, cuts, folds, and muted aesthetics. Their photographs capture the architecture of dystopian landscapes, both sparse and dense. Often tightly shot and divorced from broader context, these images evoke a sense of alienation. Recent sculptures tend instead towards more playful aesthetics. Translating minimalist forms like the humble paperclip to large scale steel and copper pieces, Whyte elevates functional objects, speaking to notions of industrial intervention, labour, and force.
